Wild Rose Oil for Hair: Benefits and How to Use It

by sabpro September 1, 2021
written by sabpro

Roses have been an essential part of beauty routines across the globe for many centuries. They are mentioned in ancient Chinese and Sanskrit texts and can even be found in fossils dating from about 40 million years ago. From their pleasant aroma to their vitamin-rich composition, its easy to see why this one flower has remained a beauty staple. Many are familiar with the use of rose water for both skin and hair, but there are other rose byproducts that can be incorporated into your self-care regimen.

Wild rose oil (sometimes just referred to as rose oil) is oil distilled from the petals of the rosa damascena, or hybrid rose flower. It has been used in numerous beauty treatments for both the skin and hair due to its many valuable attributes, including antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and emollient properties. When it comes to hair, wild rose oil’s ability to fortify the scalp and follicles has led some to believe it can help with hair growth and overall hair health.

Here’s How I Got Rid of My Dry Lip Problem Once and for All

by sabpro August 18, 2021
written by sabpro

Proper lip care is one of the easiest components of a beauty routine, but perhaps the most often overlooked. Far too often I see people with dry lips and not a single balm to their name, or liquid lipstick clinging to dry skin. Although properly caring for your lips is important for your overall skin health, not everyone knows the necessary tools or steps.

Throughout my childhood and early teenage years, my lips were constantly cracked and peeling. Not only was this annoying, but it was also incredibly painful—causing frequent tears in my skin and even bleeding. Over the years, my naturally large lips have all led me down the path to seek out the perfect lip care routine.

On my journey of discovery towards ultimate lip-enlightenment, I found that when combatting dry lips, moisture is the name of the game. Hydration within your body, external moisture in the air, and the products you use will all contribute to your moisture levels, which help with a graceful cell turnover that doesn’t include flakes or chapped lips. Caring for your lips doesn’t need to take all of your time, and with a bit of effort, you can kiss dry lips good-bye.

Carrot Oil for Hair Growth—Does It Actually Work?

by sabpro July 13, 2021
written by sabpro

When you think of carrots, chances are you’re adding it to a salad or pairing it with hummus as a snack. But the entire vegetable—from the roots to the seeds—has tons of health and beauty benefits. In fact, have you ever thought about using carrots in your hair routine? Aside from improving eye health and lowering cholesterol, carrots are also key to producing carrot oil, which is known to help strengthen, moisturize, and stimulate hair follicles.

So is carrot oil the secret to hair growth? We spoke to two trichologists—Bridgette Hill, a certified trichologist and founder of Root Cause Scalp Analysis, and Gretchen Friese, a BosleyMD-certified trichologist—for their advice on whether or not carrot oil for hair is worth trying out.

Gemma Chan on How to Be a Better Ally and Skincare as Self-Care

by sabpro June 22, 2021
written by sabpro

Gemma Chan is a force of nature. She’s an international spokesperson for L’Oréal Paris, joining the ranks of other notable women including Katherine Langford, Eva Longoria, and Viola Davis. She’s graced both the small and big screens, including memorable roles in Crazy Rich Asians, and by the end of this year, not one, but two Marvel films. She’s also lent her voice in Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon (Chan and I will later bond over watching the film, I with my niece and she with her nephew, and how animation can create beautiful memories).

Behind the spotlight, Chan is a tireless activist. As a Unicef UK Ambassador, she advocates for vulnerable children, women, and families, and she uses social media to amplify ways to support marginalized communities. When asked about the current rise in anti-Asian hate crimes, she easily names off a list of resources people can use to educate themselves and take action, but also offers one positive outcome amidst all the tragedy—that communities are coming together in allyship and collectively speaking out about all forms of hate. It’s timely, then, one of her upcoming projects is producing a podcast and film about the 1982 murder of Vincent Chin, which resulted in a case where a civil rights violation was first applied to the murder of an Asian American.

Everything You Need to Know About Using Vitamin E Oil For Hair

by sabpro June 15, 2021
written by sabpro

On the heels of the skincare-over-makeup movement, the next frontier is scalp as skin and styling hair without the damage of heat tools. Enter: hair oils. While they can be an intimidating terrain to navigate, each oil has its own chemical properties and subsequently its own benefits. Vitamin E oil is an excellent first venture into the hair oil territory, as it is already a well-known antioxidant and part of a well-balanced diet. Long respected for its ability to protect and maintain youthful skin, vitamin E oil has recently gained popularity for its potential ability to transform scalp health and smooth dry, frizzy hair.

How Long Does Microblading Last? We Investigate

by sabpro April 2, 2021
written by sabpro

Whether you’re someone who has sparse brows, uneven arches, or no brow hairs at all, there’s a good chance you’ve heard about microblading. After all, the cosmetic tattooing technique is one of the best ways to achieve the brows of your dreams and, if all goes well, they’ll last a lot longer than your regular brow pencils, pens, and pomades. That’s because, rather than simply tracing temporary color over your skin, Studio Sashiko owner and cosmetic tattoo artist Shaughnessy Otsuji says that microblading relies on multiple needles aligned in a row to implant pigments beneath the skin to mimic the look of very fine hairs. As such, she says that microblading is the most popular method for achieving fluffy, natural, hair-like brows that are built to last. Just how long, however, depends on how you care for them post-ink sesh. For that reason, we chatted with Otsuji and a few other brow experts for everything there is to know about maintaining microbladed arches. Keep reading to discover what they have to say on the topic.

How Makeup Got Me Through Grad School

by sabpro July 4, 2020
written by sabpro

I’m not like Elaine Showalter.

A Princeton professor revered for her pioneering work in feminist criticism, Showalter has written on everything from sexual anarchy to Victorian hysteria. Among her less-cited works, though, there’s a three-page essay, bare of footnotes, that sticks in my head like the cling of a heavy perfume.

Essential Lipstick Tricks From A Makeup Artist

Printed in neat double columns in 1997’s December issue, “The Professor Wore Prada” takes us through Showalter’s illustrious “career of literature and lipstick”, from the articles she authored to the Revlon tubes she stockpiled along the way. There’s one line, in particular, that I can’t stop thinking about. Showalter says, “I can remember what I wore to my Ph.D. orals (little white Courrèges boots) as well as the questions I aced.”
