Glow Recipe: Brand Review and 8 of the Best Products

by sabpro July 12, 2021
written by sabpro

Glow Recipe is the K-beauty-inspired brand that formulates natural, fruit-powered skincare designed to help bring out your inner glow. All of its products are 100% natural and cruelty free, which makes it easy to look good and feel good simultaneously. From watermelon PHA+BHA toners to plum serums infused with hyaluronic acid and retinol-based avocado sleeping eye masks, it’s clear to see why the brand has so many cult beauty favorites.

When Glow Recipe founders Christine Chang and Sarah Lee were living in New York and working in the beauty industry, they noticed global brands looking to Korea for the latest advancements in skincare and ingredients. As a result, ‘’the whole industry was intrigued, but the K-beauty brands didn’t tell the whole story behind the approach,’’ Lee told Byrdie.

Xanthan Gum Is in Almost Every Hair Product—But What Does It Do?

by sabpro June 22, 2021
written by sabpro

Reading the ingredient list on beauty and hair products can sometimes feel like you’re taking a chemistry class. While it can feel overwhelming, understanding what is in the products you use every day is important, and can help you figure out what active ingredients provide you with the most benefit. As you start to get more familiar with these labels, one ingredient you’re guaranteed to see listed time and time again is xanthan gum.

Used in everything from conditioner to cookies, xanthan gum is utilized across industries and product lines. It has managed to fly under the radar despite its inclusion in every step of our haircare routines. But for something most of us are using (and eating) every day, do we really know what xanthan gum is?

Are Apricot and Walnut Scrubs Really That Bad For Your Skin?

by sabpro April 26, 2021
written by sabpro

If you came of age during the era of Bonne Bell Lip Smackers, there’s an excellent chance that physical scrubs were your introduction to exfoliation—and you used them a lot. Between the rough texture and yummy smell, it felt like you were doing your skin a favor, scrubbing away whatever skin issues you had back then (hello, acne) to reveal better, brighter skin underneath.

But our beauty routines have come a long way, and now we’re well aware that a harsh, abrasive scrub certainly isn’t doing breakouts any favors, to say the least. But are apricot and walnut scrubs actually good for anyone’s skin? We tapped two dermatologists, Dr. Dendy Engelman and Dr. Orit Markowitz, to find whether or not apricot and walnut scrubs are actually bad for you.

The Byrdie Boy Guide to Getting a Facial

by sabpro April 5, 2021
written by sabpro

A long with manicures and massages, facials are one of the most accessible and beneficial spa treatments available to men. They’re certainly one of the most enjoyable, and compared with eyebrow threading and back waxes, they’re also one of the least painful.

They’re also definitely not just for women. “Men can benefit from facials just as much as women can,” says Brandith Irwin, MD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of SkinTour.com. “Dull skin, clogged pores, non-inflammatory acne, and some aging issues can all be addressed with facials. Plus, they’re relaxing, and self-care helps with stress!”

I Tried Retinol, Lasers, and Peels Before My Wedding Day—Here’s What Worked

by sabpro March 11, 2021
written by sabpro

Before getting engaged, I operated under the assumption that I had reasonably good skin, mainly because I no longer suffered from breakouts. A pimple popped up here and there, but they were few and far between. I started implementing anti-aging products into my routine on a basic level: Eye creams, rich moisturizers, serums, and sunscreen — lots of sunscreen. However, with a sparkly new ring on my finger, my primary concerns over dullness, fine lines, and perpetually congested pores plagued me. Dramatic? Perhaps. But to achieve a wedding-worthy glow, I was ready to level up my skincare game. For me, that meant entering into the world of medical facials, lasers, and peels.

I saw the results my friend, Lucille Javier, achieved from treatments like Clear + Brilliant laser and JetPeel facials at Flash Lab Skin and Laser, and I knew it was the place to embark upon my wedding skincare journey. Javier quickly connected me with Flash Lab’s CIDESCO medical aesthetician Gabrielle Hope Bradley, and I set up a consultation to map out a course of action. Ahead, I break down my step-by-step wedding skincare prep.

Purslane Extract Is a Hidden Gem in Anti-Aging Skincare

by sabpro January 12, 2021
written by sabpro

Though we’ve become comfortable with certain “mainstream” skincare ingredients (i.e. vitamin C or hyaluronic acid), others can still feel confusing and mysterious. You may not have heard of purslane extract, for example, despite its superpower properties.

Deriving from the succulent Portulaca oleracea, purslane extract provides serious antioxidant benefits. The effects it has on the skin—it can help heal wounds, calm irritated skin, and hydrate, and it has strong anti-aging properties—make it an ingredient that dermatologists say has many benefits. “It’s a real superfood sleeper,” says dermatologist Dr. Kristina Collins, MD, FAAD. “It’s loaded with more omega fatty acids than fish oil and more vitamins than our healthiest veggies. It has a great source of skin-beneficial minerals like potassium, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus.”
