How to Adjust Your Foundation From Season to Season

by sabpro April 5, 2021
written by sabpro

It goes without saying that finding the right foundation is a journey. When you find the perfect foundation formula for your specific skin type and concerns, you’ll want to hold onto it for dear life.

The bad news is that—realistically—it can be majorly tricky to make sure your foundation works for your skin year-round. Between summer tans and vitamin D shortages during the winter months, your true skin tone can jump around depending on the season—which means the shade that works in August likely isn’t the same one you need in February.

Of course, the most important thing is taking care of your skin and wearing SPF year-round, and—depending on your proclivity to sunlight and tanning—you might not have this issue. But if you do, know that it’s totally normal to have a skin tone that adjusts a few shades depending on the season.

The good news is: You don’t have to swap out your favorite foundation to make do when this happens. We spoke to makeup artists to get their tips on adjusting your foundation shade from season to season—so you can stick with your favorite formula and have a face that still matches your neck in the winter.

Yes, Eyebrow Transplants Are a Thing—Here’s How It’s Done

by sabpro March 22, 2021
written by sabpro

High arched, softly angled, thick, and flat. The anatomy of an eyebrow can convey your signature look. “Eyebrows have been gaining increased attention and for good reason,” says Vanessa Coppola, a board-certified nurse practitioner and the founder of Bare Aesthetic Medical Spa. “Historically, eyebrows serve as a focal point of the face and provide a frame for the upper eye region and the lateral cheek area.” If, however, in your journey to achieving the perfect brow for you, you’ve overplucked and your brow has since diminished, you might want to consider an eyebrow transplant.

An eyebrow transplant involves replacement of eyebrow hair by transferring hair from the scalp (usually above the ears) to the eyebrows.

Do You Have Chronic Yeast Infections? This May Be Why

by sabpro March 6, 2021
written by sabpro

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), three out of four women will get more than two vaginal yeast infections in their lives, making yeast infections the second most common vaginal infection in the US (bacterial vaginosis is the most common). So chances are, you’ve most likely had one. But what makes a yeast infection chronic?

If you’re experiencing “more than four infections in one year,” explains Allison Hill, MD, “it is considered to be a chronic yeast infection.” The culprit of chronic yeast infections lies in disruptions to the vaginal microbiome. “Our vagina is filled with billions of organisms, including bacteria and yeast known as the microbiome,” explains Hill. “A healthy microbiome consists mostly of an organism called Lactobacillus. When the Lactobacillus levels are low, other bacteria and yeast can overgrow, leading to infections.”

How to Remove Dip Powder Nails, According to Nail Technicians

by sabpro February 17, 2021
written by sabpro

Dip powder nails (also known as SNS nails) have recently become synonymous with gorgeous, long-lasting color that (supposedly) doesn’t sacrifice the health of your nails. The only problem is, just like gel, removing it at home can be pretty tricky (read: damaging), which is why the process has been getting some flack.

“There are two issues that I’ve found with dips and nail health,” Lauren Dunne explains. “The first is that it is designed to stay on the nail for 2-4 weeks, which can result in issues like spotting on your nails from keratin granulation or from color pigments. Second, if the dip begins to lift over time, moisture can get captured, which can cause bacterial infections.”

While that sounds scary, the buzz-worthy technique has plenty of plusses too—even when it comes to removing it at home.

Beyond the Gut: Here’s Why Everyone in Skincare Is Talking About the Microbiome

by sabpro February 9, 2021
written by sabpro

I don’t know when probiotic skincare came into my consciousness, just like I don’t know when every woman in L.A. and NYC started wearing the same animal-print silk midi skirt. I only know that one day, both things became ubiquitous on social media feeds. As someone who doesn’t have Instagram, I was getting screenshots of ads for various probiotic skincare lines in my email inbox from friends with a consistent subject line: “Thoughts?” All of a sudden, probiotic skincare became a bandwagon, and I’ve never met a bandwagon I didn’t want to jump on.

As I researched in-depth, I learned that this is less of a bandwagon, and more of a movement. I’ve always known about the body’s and gut’s microbiome, but the skin’s microbiome was relatively new to me. It had come up once or twice during my extensive research into perioral dermatitis, but nothing was mainstream.

Which Collagen Sources Should You Try?

by sabpro February 2, 2021
written by sabpro

You might see someone stirring it into their coffee. Or sipping on a brownish liquid midday (and nope, it isn’t coffee). Or taking capsules along with other morning vitamins. It’s collagen — and it’s one of the buzziest ingredients in skin care.

“Collagen is an abundant protein occurring naturally in the body, and can be found in the bones, muscles, organs, and skin,” says Marisa Garshick, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City and an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medical Center.

When it comes to your skin, collagen is what makes it smooth, plump, and springy. The more collagen in your face, the fewer wrinkles you have. There are at least 28 different types of collagen, with collagen type 1 and 3 found in skin, as an article published in April 2020 in Marine Drugs noted.
