QQ: Why Is My Period So Light?

by sabpro October 5, 2021
written by sabpro

Most people who menstruate will experience some sort of irregularity in their flow at one time or another, but more often than not, it’s not a cause for concern. Remember, everyone’s cycle is unique to them—some are like clockwork, and others fluctuate month to month.

One concern, in particular, that is often seen at the gynecologist’s office is an unusually light period. We asked gynecologists Dr. Alyssa Dweck and Dr. Sara Twogood to explain some of the reasons a period might be or become extremely light.

What Can Cause a Light Period?

The term ‘light period’ can refer to both the length of the period—fewer bleeding days than normal—and/or lighter bleeding and spotting. Many of the causes are very common and totally normal, whereas a few rarer ones may require further investigation.

All of the Ways Resveratrol Can Benefit Your Skin

by sabpro September 4, 2021
written by sabpro

If you’ve ever indulged in a glass of red wine after a long day and thought to yourself, “it’s okay, because red wine is good for you,” that’s thanks to one specific antioxidant: resveratrol. This super potent antioxidant is also found in red grapes, peanuts and berries like blueberries and mulberries.

“Like any antioxidant, resveratrol neutralizes free radicals produced by environmental damage such as radiation, cigarette smoke and air pollution,” says Geeta Yadav, M.D., M.H.S., F.R.C.P.C., a board certified dermatologist based in Toronto. “This kind of cellular damage accelerates the process of aging by increasing the oxidative stress on skin.”

Wild Rose Oil for Hair: Benefits and How to Use It

by sabpro September 1, 2021
written by sabpro

Roses have been an essential part of beauty routines across the globe for many centuries. They are mentioned in ancient Chinese and Sanskrit texts and can even be found in fossils dating from about 40 million years ago. From their pleasant aroma to their vitamin-rich composition, its easy to see why this one flower has remained a beauty staple. Many are familiar with the use of rose water for both skin and hair, but there are other rose byproducts that can be incorporated into your self-care regimen.

Wild rose oil (sometimes just referred to as rose oil) is oil distilled from the petals of the rosa damascena, or hybrid rose flower. It has been used in numerous beauty treatments for both the skin and hair due to its many valuable attributes, including antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and emollient properties. When it comes to hair, wild rose oil’s ability to fortify the scalp and follicles has led some to believe it can help with hair growth and overall hair health.

Here’s How I Got Rid of My Dry Lip Problem Once and for All

by sabpro August 18, 2021
written by sabpro

Proper lip care is one of the easiest components of a beauty routine, but perhaps the most often overlooked. Far too often I see people with dry lips and not a single balm to their name, or liquid lipstick clinging to dry skin. Although properly caring for your lips is important for your overall skin health, not everyone knows the necessary tools or steps.

Throughout my childhood and early teenage years, my lips were constantly cracked and peeling. Not only was this annoying, but it was also incredibly painful—causing frequent tears in my skin and even bleeding. Over the years, my naturally large lips have all led me down the path to seek out the perfect lip care routine.

On my journey of discovery towards ultimate lip-enlightenment, I found that when combatting dry lips, moisture is the name of the game. Hydration within your body, external moisture in the air, and the products you use will all contribute to your moisture levels, which help with a graceful cell turnover that doesn’t include flakes or chapped lips. Caring for your lips doesn’t need to take all of your time, and with a bit of effort, you can kiss dry lips good-bye.

“Hair Botox” Is a Thing (but It’s Not What You’re Thinking)

by sabpro August 12, 2021
written by sabpro

If you’re familiar with Botox, a treatment in which botulinum toxin is injected into muscles to relax them for wrinkle-free skin, then the name “hair botox” might cause you to raise a brow (that is, if you don’t currently have Botox in your forehead preventing you from doing so). Without muscles to relax or wrinkles to remedy, why would your hair need Botox? If you take into account the way injectables smooth skin, “hair botox” is the perfect nickname for a deep-conditioning hair treatment—which is exactly what it is.

“Despite having ‘Botox’ in its name, there actually is no Botox (botulinum toxins) involved,” explains cosmetic dermatologist Michele Green, MD. “Hair botox is a deep conditioning treatment that repairs the damaged and broken hair fibers, which can be a result of stress and heat on our strands.” To learn all about this hair service, and deep-conditioning treatments, in general, we turned to Green as well as trichologist and co-founder of Fourteenjay Salon, David Adams, and hairstylist and artistic director of Paul Labrecque Salon and Skincare Spa, Paul Labrecque.
